Saratoga's holiday season starts in two places, a week apart. The first half happens up the hill at Montalvo, mostly in daylight, and centers on a free gift market in the historic Villa the weekend before Thanksgiving. The second half belongs to the Historic Saratoga Village. It takes up one Friday, November 27, and runs as a relay. A free event for kids hands off to the Holiday Tree Lighting in Blaney Plaza, which hands off to the Chamber's evening wine stroll. From 3 p.m. to 9 p.m., the three events follow one another with no more than a half hour between them.
So the season is easy to plan if you treat it as a sequence. Do your shopping on the hill on November 20 or 21, then spend all of Black Friday afternoon and evening on Big Basin Way. The rest of November and early December fills in around those two dates.
The Hill Goes First, and Mostly by Daylight
Montalvo Arts Center's holiday calendar leans toward the daytime. The Yuletide Boutique is a free holiday market run by the Montalvo Service Group. It fills the historic Villa with handmade gifts, holiday décor, specialty foods from local vendors and vintage finds. It runs 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and parking is free. Admission costs nothing, but Montalvo asks visitors to register in advance so it can plan for the crowd.
The Boutique is the middle of a full week of holiday programming on the hill. Here is the sequence from Montalvo's events calendar:
- Sunday, November 15: holiday gift-making and wreath workshops
- Friday, November 20 and Saturday, November 21: Yuletide Boutique, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day
- Sunday, November 22: Yuletide Tea, listed at $75 per seat, a $70 meal price plus $5 in fees
The workshop on the 15th makes good preparation for the market that follows. You can make a wreath for your own door one Sunday, then come back five days later to shop for everyone else. The tea on the 22nd wraps up the weekend, four days before Thanksgiving.
Friday, November 27, Hour by Hour
Down in the Village, the holidays start the day after Thanksgiving. The City of Saratoga calls the Holiday Tree Lighting the main event and tells visitors to "come early and stay late" for the downtown shops and restaurants. The schedule backs that up. Here is how the evening fits together:
| Time | What's happening | Where | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3:00–5:00 p.m. | Candy Cane Village | Saratoga Chamber of Commerce, 14460 Big Basin Way | Free |
| 5:00 p.m. | Wine stroll check-in opens | Saratoga Chamber of Commerce, 14460 Big Basin Way | Ticketed |
| 5:30–6:30 p.m. | Holiday Tree Lighting | Blaney Plaza | Free |
| 6:00–9:00 p.m. | Saratoga's Holiday Wine Experience | Throughout the Historic Saratoga Village | $50 advance, $60 day of |
| Until 7:30 p.m. | Day-of wine tickets on sale | Chamber door | $60 |
The handoffs are close. Candy Cane Village wraps up at 5:00, which leaves half an hour to walk over to Blaney Plaza before the lights go on at 5:30. Wine stroll check-in opens at the Chamber at 5:00, the same minute the kids' event ends, so adults with tickets can pick up their wristbands before the tree lighting and skip the line afterward. The wine stroll begins at 6:00 while the tree lighting is still underway, which gives the evening a half-hour overlap instead of a gap.
The Afternoon Belongs to Kids
The City of Saratoga describes Candy Cane Village as a free event held before the tree lighting. It lists free photos with Santa and his elves, horse-carriage rides, holiday arts-and-crafts tables for children and live sing-along music. It runs from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Chamber's office at 14460 Big Basin Way.
The address matters because the same building serves as check-in for the wine stroll a couple of hours later. Families who come for the Santa photos and adults who come for the wine pass through the same door on the same afternoon, and the tree lighting at Blaney Plaza falls between the two crowds.
What the Wine Ticket Includes
Saratoga's Holiday Wine Experience is hosted by the Saratoga Chamber of Commerce together with the Village's merchants and restaurants. The Chamber describes wineries from near and far pouring along the Village, with live music by Kurt & Johnny. The logistics are specific:
- Check-in opens at 5:00 p.m. at 14460 Big Basin Way. Bring your ticket confirmation, and a phone screen works.
- Bring a valid photo ID. The Chamber checks ID for every attendee.
- At check-in you get a wristband, a wine glass and an event brochure that lists every tasting location.
- Tickets cost $50 in advance and $60 on the day, with day-of sales at the Chamber's door ending at 7:30 p.m. A group of eight pays $375. All prices are before processing fees and tax.
The group rate works out to about $46.88 a person, a little over $3 less than the advance price and about $13 less than buying at the door. For a group of friends or a family celebrating after Thanksgiving, buying together saves real money. The event's Eventbrite page says parking is free throughout the Historic Saratoga Village.
The brochure you receive at check-in is the night's guide to where wine is being poured.
The Village's Own Wine Spots Keep Their Regular Hours
Big Basin Way has several wine spots open all year, and on a regular Friday their hours line up with the holiday evening in different ways. These are their posted hours on an ordinary week:
- Roudon-Smith Winery has a public tasting room at 14572A Big Basin Way. On Fridays it is open 2 to 7 p.m., so on November 27 its regular hours would cover Candy Cane Village, the tree lighting and the first hour of the stroll.
- Shyr Wines is at 14440 Big Basin Way, Suite 10. The Chamber lists its hours as Thursday through Sunday, 4:30 to 8:30 p.m., which fits the evening almost exactly.
- Pop Haus Coffee at 14612 Big Basin Way, Suite A, serves coffee and wine and carries Georgian wines, a choice you won't find at most nearby counters.
- Flowers Saratoga at 14577 Big Basin Way serves dinner from 5 to 10:15 p.m. on Fridays and has a wine list of about 30 bottles. It is the latest kitchen in this group, and its hours extend past the stroll's 9 p.m. finish.
Hours can change around a holiday, so check with each business before you go. Taken together, these regular schedules cover the whole stretch from 2 p.m. to after 10. The day-long relay is how the Village already operates on a Friday.
Filling In Around the Two Big Dates
The rest of the season builds on that same split between the hill and the Village.
On Big Basin Way before Thanksgiving. Aegis Gallery of Fine Art at 14531 Big Basin Way is showing "Wild Hearts, Gentle Bonds," oil paintings by Bhawna Seth of animal mothers and their young. The show runs through Sunday, November 29, with a free artist reception this Saturday, November 7, from 3 to 6 p.m. The Chamber lists the gallery as open Wednesday through Sunday, and the show stays up through Thanksgiving weekend, so it falls on the same Friday as the tree lighting.
Evenings at Montalvo in mid-November. The hill hosts concerts along with its daytime markets. Montalvo's calendar lists SOLAS on Friday, November 6, The Smithereens on Thursday, November 12, Marc Broussard on Friday, November 13, and The Sarod Trilogy on Saturday, November 14, all at 7:30 p.m.
Montalvo in early December. After the Village has its Friday, the hill picks the season back up. Montalvo lists a wreath workshop on Wednesday, December 2, at 6 p.m.; "Top of the World – A Carpenters Tribute" on Thursday, December 3; "A Christmas Carol 2026" on Friday, December 4; and Charo on Saturday, December 5.
A quieter Sunday at Hakone. Hakone Gardens holds public Tea Ceremony Demonstrations on Sunday, December 6, with seatings at noon or 1 p.m. Ceremony tickets are sold separately from garden admission.
Saturday mornings, as usual. The Saratoga Farmers' Market runs every Saturday all year from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in West Valley College Parking Lot 3, at Fruitvale Avenue and Career Way. On Saturday, November 21, you could shop the market in the morning and still get to the Yuletide Boutique before it closes at 3.
Here is the season in order. Make a wreath at Montalvo on November 15. Shop the Villa on November 20 or 21. Take the kids to Candy Cane Village at 3 p.m. on November 27, walk to Blaney Plaza for the 5:30 lighting, then pick up your glass at the Chamber for the 6 p.m. stroll. Montalvo's stages and Hakone's tea ceremony carry the season into the first week of December.
